"How did I end up in Fort McMurray? I joined the military when I was fairly young around twenty one and was in it for around three years. Around my third year of being in, I found out my cousin had went out west which was very interesting. It's a horrible wage being in the military. My dad was in the military so I just did it for something to do.
So I called my cousin and he was telling me how crazy it was out here. He had asked me how much I was making and when I told him he said “Dude that's how much i’m making in one week”. So that just hit the light bulb on for me.
So then I tried every thing in my power to get out of the military so I could come out west. It took me about 11 months and I was disciplined quite a bit for submitting requests to leave. Eventually they gave me my papers of discharge.
I sold a car and had about eight hundred bucks and I drove to Fort McMurray. It took me three and a half days non stop. The funny thing is i’m really bad with directions so I had to buy myself a tom-tom, that took up a lot of my money. So I slept in my car the whole time and didn't eat very much.
When I got here my cousin put me up on a cot for three weeks. Within five days I got a job as a pump watch. My first days off I started looking for another job, eventually I got a job as a surveyor. I did that for less than a year, seven months after moving to Fort McMurray I bought my first house."
