"I came to Fort McMurray for a fresh start in 2012, my little sister had just moved here with her husband and told me I needed to get my butt up here ASAP. I drove here in my 1997 forest green dodge caravan. That van did not last my first winter in Fort McMurray. Shoutout to NorthStar Ford for hooking me up with a new ride!
I packed up my 3 tiny children and everything we owned that would fit in the van and drove the 24 hours it took to get here. I somehow managed to convince my mom to come for the drive and stay with me until we were settled. It was a huge blessing that she agreed to come. I am not sure I would have made it without her.
I stayed with my sister in her 2 bedroom apartment until I was able to find a job and our own place. I remember standing in line to view a basement apartment that was renting for $2800 at the time. The landlord told me if I was interested I had to give him the deposit right then and there or the next people in line would get it. I looked back at the people behind me who were trying not to look like they were ease dropping and decided to write him a cheque.
The neighbors upstairs knocked on my door the day after we moved in to welcome me and ended up giving me their spare set of living room furniture they had in the garage. I needed so much when I first got here and the community was nothing but giving, they saved me.
I met my husband at Walmart of all places only a couple of weeks after moving here, we eloped 3 years later. We had joked about getting married in Walmart but we actually said our vows in Timberlea at the gazebo on Burns Drive.
Fort McMurray is my home, as much as I miss the ocean I can't imagine living anywhere else."
